Welcome to the participants of the our very first “LEARNING BY REFRACTION” Workshop on the IPP!

This workshop is offered by the Ignatian Initiative for Teacher Excellence (IGNITE) for our Ignatian educators in Asia Pacific, especially our classroom teachers and academic leaders. It is designed as a module for the IGNITE stream called TILT (Training on Ignatian Learning and Teaching).

Workshop Overview: 2018 is the 25th anniversary of the 1993 publication of Ignatian Pedagogy: A Practical Approach. Since then, Ignatian educators all over the world have exerted their best efforts in implementing the IPP–and have learned from their practice as well as conversations with their colleagues. We have curated some of the most significant insights learned about IPP by both scholars and especially practitioners in the hope of continuing the conversation and the learning.

Dates: September 23 (Sunday) to 29 (Saturday), 2018 (Arrive by Sunday evening. Depart by Saturday morning). If you are planning to spend a few days before or after the workshop and require accommodation, you must make your own arrangement by emailing Ms. Nudcha Sornbootra (himmaphan@gmail.com).

ARRIVAL + REGISTRATION FEES

Seven Fountains provides no airport pick-up service, but it is easy to get there from the airport. Go to the Airport Taxi Counter and tell them that you want to go to “Seven Fountains.” The ride takes about 10 minutes, and they will bring you directly to the main building of our Retreat House. Their hours of operation are 07:00 hrs until the arrival of the last plane of the day. [After you leave the baggage claim area and are in the arrival terminal, look for the counter which says “Airport Taxi” — not “Meter-Taxi”.]

Pay your registration fee of US$375–preferably in cash–to Ms Jennie Hickey anytime on the first two days.

OVERVIEW: WHAT TO EXPECT

The workshop will introduce a particular approach to Ignatian Pedagogy not as prescription, but as conversation piece to provoke thought and talk. The primary purpose is for IPP practitioners to share experiences and expertise to improve our own practice of Ignatian Pedagogy in our respective contexts.

In this workshop, you will learn: (a) where Ignatian Pedagogy originated, and (b) how the five ingredients of IPP (Context, Experience, Reflection, Action, and Evaluation) can promote learning and formation in the classroom.

The following will be the main sessions:

  • The Origin of the IPP and Its Roots in Ignatian Spirituality
  • Refractive Learning: An Approach to Ignatian Pedagogy as Learner-Centered, Reflection-Driven, and Action-Oriented
  • Establishing Empathy through Context
  • Building Empowerment through Experience
  • Strengthening Engagement through Reflection
  • Promoting Excellence through Action
  • Expanding Expertise and Enthusiasm through Evaluation

Please be prepared to share and present:

(a) “What does IPP look like and sound like in my/our schools?”
(b) What do I hope to learn from the workshop?
